ARTISTIC HISTORY
Qualifications and Experience
As a child I always had a great reverence for art, and as is often the case, it was an art teacher who pointed out my own ability for it. I have a great deal of artistic experience having begun my journey in earnest right out of high school. It wasn't until my second college year that my hands touched clay. I loved everything about it, from its soft malleability to its rock hard permanence and every stage in between! For my undergrad work, I earned a BFA with a concentration in clay and a minor in fibers. My postgraduate work includes a certificate degree in photography, a PA certification to teach art K-12, an MFA in ceramics including studies in Italy, and a variety of other Master's level fine art and art education courses. I was fortunate enough to teach high school ceramics all 24 years of my teaching career. My passion for clay has grown incrementally through the years I've been involved with it.
Ceramic Arts Educator
August 1999 to June 2022
In this teaching position I was given the opportunity to develop a high-level, high school, Ceramic Arts Program from the ground up. It quickly became one of the most requested tracks of the 5 art tracks in this high school and allowed students to choose college credit for some of the courses. Over the years of my tenure my students received local, regional and national recognition for their ceramic works.
ART DEPERTMENT CHAIR
July 2015 to July 2022
I had the honor of serving as art department chair for 7 years. In the context of a this public high school our art department was a shining example of all the current pedagogy and acted as a guide to other departments. In my service as art chair, I established the artist/teacher model. Our art teachers acted as working artists that were also teachers. This earned respect, and trust from students and allowed them to see themselves as artists.
